Behind the Scenes

Project
Trick or Freak is a horror short film created with the Prowlers and released on October 31st for Halloween. The project is a sequel to the band’s 2002 music video Joseph Merrick, revisiting one of its characters to develop a new chapter in the story.

The short film ends with a preview of the band’s new single, Not by My Side, featuring an excerpt from the track.

Concept & Visual Direction
The story follows the return from the dead of the circus ringmaster, killed by Joseph Merrick in the previous video. The original concept was developed by Luca Segatori, the band’s lead singer, and subsequently expanded through the selection of the main filming location and the definition of the visual approach and technical shooting solutions.

The visual style draws inspiration from classic 1980s horror cinema, embracing the atmosphere and storytelling techniques associated with that era.

Production & Music
I handled the video shooting, editing, audio synchronisation and photography, including images created for social media promotion. The photographs also document behind-the-scenes moments, including the makeup process for the lead character, Emanuele Carnaroli, carried out by Luca Segatori.

Most of the production took place in the band’s rehearsal room, which served as the main filming location. Alongside my visual and technical contributions, I was directly involved in the music production, recording the guitar parts and contributing to the track’s arrangement.

Digital Promotion
The release was preceded by a social media campaign consisting of four posts published on October 27th, 28th, 29th and 30th. Designed as a countdown, the campaign gradually built audience curiosity by hinting at the return of a character from the previous music video, leading up to the short film’s release for Halloween.

The project brings together storytelling, audiovisual production, photography, music and digital promotion in a single creative experience.
