Behind the scenes

From the original project
The geometric system behind Colonizer was originally developed for a professional project, where the same fractal grid was used to construct both the agency’s symbol and the custom lettering.

This shared construction system created a direct visual relationship between the mark and the typography, providing the foundation for the subsequent development of the typeface.

Digital Typeface — Personal Study
Colonizer is a digital typeface developed as an extension of a typographic exploration originally created for a professional project.

The initial project involved the design of several decorative initials. The geometric construction behind them led me to further develop the idea, extending it to the entire alphabet and turning it into a complete typeface.

A fractal construction
Each character is built on a fractal grid made of adjacent equilateral triangles. This geometric system provides a common structural framework for the entire alphabet, maintaining visual consistency across the different characters.

A distinctive recurring element is the inverted equilateral triangle, integrated into the structure of each letter. Its downward orientation represents a concentrated force descending from above and imposing itself on the elements below.

This concept also inspired the name Colonizer.

From lettering to typeface
All characters were initially constructed in vector format, developing each letter from the underlying geometric grid.

The project was then brought into FontLab, where I transformed the graphic system into a functional digital typeface, working systematically on kerning.

This is the first typographic research project I have developed using professional type design software. It gave me the opportunity to explore an area that is not normally part of my day-to-day projects while also developing an idea that could otherwise have remained unused after its initial professional application.

Variations
The current version is still in beta and includes several interpretations of the same geometric structure: Regular, Outline, Inlined, Thin, Maze.

The typeface has been exported as a TrueType font and can be installed and used as a digital typeface.

Specimen and applications
In addition to the complete alphabet and numerical characters, I created a series of graphic compositions and illustrations to demonstrate the expressive possibilities of the typeface and suggest some potential applications.

The project can certainly be further refined and developed, but this beta version represents the result of a personal exploration that started from a concrete professional need and was subsequently developed independently.
